Elevator Association of Florida Meeting Minutes
Miami Beach
**8:40 Call to order by Lee Rigby.
Introduction of members and guests present – 42 attendees signed-in. Mr.
Rigby mentioned the EAOF website, new information on it and to contact
Susie with questions. Review agenda for 04/06 meeting. Motion to approve
agenda by Tim Newton was seconded by Mike Chavez. Minutes from Jan. 06
meeting were reviewed on overhead screen. Motion was made to accept
minutes by Mike Chavez, seconded by Joe Melusky, and passed.
**8:52 Tim Newton gives treasurers report.
Report was that dues are past due and that Mr. Newton would be available
to receive any payments at this meeting. Motion to approve treasurer’s
report as read was made by Bill Snyder, second by Don Carrington, and
passed.
**8:54 As part of the Presidents report Mr. Rigby
handed out and began discussion on the latest "Industry Bulletin" issued
by the State of Florida. This bulletin addresses retroactive codes and
requires enforcement of such codes. Questions were taken about the
bulletin from those present. Several good questions were asked and
discussed. Concluded at 9:42.
**9:45 Jennifer Holder from
AIN Plastics was introduced.
Ms. Holder discussed underground cylinder protection provided by AIN. A
sample was passed around of the flexible PVC cylinder protection.
Questions were fielded by Ms. Holder. Ms. Holder talked about how a
shopvac could be used to check integrity of "EZ Sleeve" once installed.
Ms. Holder announced that a 5% discount would be offered to anyone present
at this meeting for ordering an EZ Sleeve. Many good questions were asked
and discussed including that this may be a way of meeting the requirement
of "ongoing compliance" required by code. A display was made at the back
of the room for everyone’s viewing. Ms. Holder was thanked for sponsoring
the coffee and danish provided this morning.
Discussion concluded at 09:33.
**09:35 Mr. Hector Salazar, Director of Engineering at
Pneumatic Vacuum Elevators was introduced.
He provided an overview of the vacuum elevator which included the
cylinder, controls, support/suspension or brakes and their application,
and the rise which is limited to 35 ft. Also provided was a list of
current approvals where the unit can be used to and a list of code rules
currently considered a part of a petition for variance. Many good
questions were asked and answered. Very good and interesting presentation
given by Mr. Salazar, and everyone was invited to visit their Miami
factory following today’s meeting.
**10:08 Break Announced.
**10:30 Meeting reconvened.
Bill Snyder was introduced to give a
presentation on the 2000 Code (update). Presentation includes Traction,
Hydro, MRL’s, car clearances and runbys. A good presentation given by Mr.
Snyder about existing and new changes related to Parts 2, 3 and 8.6
including periodic testing and the inspector’s manual. The floor was
opened for questions. Presentation concluded at 11:20.
**11:21 Mr. Rigby began the discussion of Old/New
Business.
"Old Business"- the next meeting will be in
Jacksonville a site has not been determined.
"New Business"- Proposed bylaws changes were
presented which includes dues, membership status, and the ability to
change or alter the date and location of future meetings to coincide with
other events/meetings within the industry that may take place during the
same time frame. The floor was opened for discussion changes were made to
the proposal. Tom Waardenburg made a motion to accept the changes to the
bylaws. Bob Offerman seconded the motion. Motion to change the bylaws was
approved.
-Mr. Rigby then began to discuss House and Senate bills
proposed (HB7121) (SB860) which will require generator power to operate
for a minimum amount of time, and provide for additional requirements for
generator power.
-Also discussed is the fire control issue and that the key
identified for replacement is a Yale key and seven different keys will be
issued, one for each of the
seven fire districts.
-The floor was opened for questions about anything
discussed or any new business.
-Mike Chavez reminded everyone that in Miami-Dade, no new
certificates would be issued without first documenting periodic tests in
addition to a clear inspection report.
**With no new questions the meeting was adjourned at
12:00 noon.
