Elevator Association of Florida Meeting Minutes
Orlando
Meeting Minutes:
Lee Rigby, President – Opened meeting with introduction of
attendees.
- Approval of agenda.
- Approval of meeting minutes from July meeting.
Announcements:
- Golf outing at October meeting has been canceled due to
lack of interest. - Mike Chavez suggested accepting donations in place of
the golf fundraiser. Pledges are being solicited for donations to the
Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation in place of the golf – a sign-up
sheet for pledges was passed around.
- Our guest speaker Ed Donoghue was unable to make it due
to the hurricane. We have three very qualified people who have offered to
speak to our group. John Shrum, Dick Gregory, and John Koshak.
Speakers were introduced:
John Shrum of
Maxton Manufacturing was the first
speaker:
- John discussed Maxton’s "Smart Tach" and gave some
information on the device and how it was developed. Everyone was invited
to visit their booth while here at the convention and see the tach in
action on a simulator.
Dick Gregory:
Dick is on the
ASME A17.1, Existing Installations
Committee.
- He spoke on changes to the Preventative Maintenance
section of the Code.
- The "C" supplement is out.
- Maintenance, which used to be in Section 1200, is now in
its own section.
- Replacing single bottom cylinders is now in A17.1.
- Discussed method of requesting interpretations from ASME
committees.
- Q & A followed.
John Koshak:
John works for
Thyssen-Krupp in the R&D department, and is
heavily involved in several
ASME A17.1 code committees.
John spoke on machine room-less(MRL) elevators and the
code changes underway to cover these devices.
- Kevlar ropes and related equipment being used by
Thyssen-Krupp.
- Other MRL designs.

Lee Rigby led a discussion regarding communication with
the
Bureau of Elevator Safety.
-A message was relayed from Geoff. Luebkemann, Division
Director that the State would not be represented at this meeting, as they
have no information for us, but they will attend the October meeting. A
Q&A session on requests for information from the Bureau of Elevator Safety
then followed.
- A motion was made, seconded and passed that all future
correspondence to the State requesting information, and any reply be
posted on the Association website so that these requests can be tracked. A
letter from the Association to the State regarding the conflicting
information on inspecting Mono-Space elevator equipment is to be written
and sent.
- Additional discussion included:
Installing and inspecting equipment meeting newer codes
than those adopted.
Code data plates – which date or edition to use.
